It is composed of Paleozoic rocks and has a dome-like shape with steep slopes. The Eleshnitsa and Batuliyska rivers spring from its foothills.
The peak is a popular tourist destination. To the southwest, at an elevation of 1,490 meters, lies the “Murgash” mountain hut, and at the southern foothills is the Eleshnitsa Monastery. An active weather station has been built on Murgash Peak.
Due to its proximity to Sofia, Murgash is one of the most popular peaks for hiking in the Stara Planina Mountains. Its summit can be reached from several locations; it should be noted that a cart track starting from Buhovo also leads to the summit.
The hike is long and involves a significant elevation gain, which should not be overlooked. For this very reason, it is recommended to undertake the climb on a day with plenty of daylight and stable weather conditions. The hike from the village of Zhelyava to Murgash Peak takes about 4 hours and 20 minutes.
