The mountain peak is located in the eastern part of the Rila Mountains, not far from the famous resort of Borovets and about 80 km from Sofia. A meteorological station operated by the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) and the “Musala” Basic Ecological Observatory of the Institute for Nuclear Research and Nuclear Energy at BAS are located on the peak.
Musala Peak is composed of Paleozoic granite, cut through by granite-porphyry veins. It features mountain-meadow soils and is covered mainly by alpine vegetation. The southern part of the massif consists of mountain pastures. The diversity of the flora—including some interesting tree species—and the fauna is remarkable. It is also a good spot for birdwatching.
The peak’s name derives from the Arabic musalla, meaning “path to God” or “place close to God.”
There are several routes to Musala Peak from Borovets; the shortest one takes the “Yastrebets” lift via the “Musala” hut and the “Everest” shelter, and the ascent takes about 4 hours. The classic ascent from Borovets via the Musala Trail, which leads to the “Musala” hut, takes about 3 hours longer. Other possible routes from Borovets go through the Maritsa Valley, where there are several marked trails between the “Chakar Voivoda,” “Maritsa,” and “Zavrachitsa.”
From the south, Musala can be climbed in about 4 hours from the “Grunchar” hut, which can be reached from Yakoruda, Belmeken, Semkovo, or the “Ribni Ezera” hut.
