The Thracians were the first people to name the mountain in the 5th century—Dounkas (also Donuka and Dunaks)—which, translated from Thracian, means “mountain with an abundance of water.” Later, the Slavs called it Roula, which translates as “water mountain.”
The Main Bulgarian Watershed runs along the Rila ridge, coinciding with the Main Balkan Watershed, which divides the drainage basins of the Black Sea and the Aegean Sea.
In Europe, Rila ranks sixth in height after the Caucasus, the Alps, Sierra Nevada, the Pyrenees, and Mount Etna. The Rila Mountains are home to a large number of rivers, springs, streams, and crystal-clear lakes. Some of Bulgaria’s largest and most abundant rivers—the Iskar, Maritsa, and Mesta—originate in the range.
The Rila Mountains contain over 200 lakes and numerous mineral springs in the fault zones (Sapareva Banya, Dolna Banya, Kostenets, Banya, and others).
The mountains are home to approximately 2,000 plant species as well as a diverse array of mountain animal species.
The average elevation of the Rila Mountains is 1,487 m, and their total area is 2,629 km². Most of its peaks reach elevations of 2,500–2,700 m, offering alpine views. The rest of the range, primarily in Eastern Rila, consists of high-mountain meadows.
The Rila Nature Reserve is located within the mountain range—the largest of all national parks in the country. It is situated between 800 and 2,925 meters above sea level in some of the highest and most central parts of Rila. Within its boundaries lie about 120 natural lakes, most of which date back to the Ice Age.
One of the most remarkable sites in the Rila Mountains is the Rila Monastery—the largest in Bulgaria, founded in the 10th century by the saint and hermit Ivan of Rila. The monastery is of immense national, architectural, and historical significance and boasts an exceptionally rich history.
