A series of Bulgarian mountains and peaks

SHIPKA

Shipka is a peak in the Stara Planina mountain range with an elevation of 1,326 m, located east of the Shipka Pass. The Monument to Freedom stands on the peak, built to honor the heroism and self-sacrificing efforts that led to Bulgaria’s liberation.

The monument is a massive dolomite tower, 31.5 meters high, shaped like a truncated pyramid. A large brass lion stands above the tower’s entrance. An interesting fact is that the stones used to build the monument were carved by hand and transported to the site by ox-drawn carts.

During the Russo-Turkish War, decisive battles were fought at this site to defend the Shipka Pass. The defenders displayed exceptional heroism, and despite the enemy’s numerical superiority, the attacks were repelled.

Shipka Peak is located 28 km from the city of Kazanlak and 22 km from the city of Gabrovo. There is convenient bus service from both cities. Access to the “Shipka” National Park-Museum is exceptionally convenient for motorists.

Shipka Peak, the Monument to Freedom, and the surrounding historical sites in the Shipka complex area are of the utmost significance to the entire Bulgarian people. They are a symbol of gratitude, a memorial to glory, and a tribute to tradition.
