A series of Bulgarian mountains and peaks

SREDNA GORA

Sredna Gora is a medium-altitude mountain range in central Bulgaria, running parallel to the Stara Planina range. The mountain range is situated between the Trans-Balkan basins to the north and the Upper Thracian Plain to the south. To the west, it extends to the Iskar River valley, and to the east—to the bend of the Tundzha River, north of the city of Yambol.

Its length from west to east is 285 kilometers, and its greatest width is about 50 kilometers. The mountain range covers an area of 5,950 km², and its average elevation is 608 m. Its highest point is Mount Golyam Bogdan, with an elevation of 1,603.4 m, located in its central, highest part—Sushinska Sredna Gora.

From the gorges of the Topolnitsa and Stryama Rivers (left tributaries of the Maritsa), Sredna Gora is divided into three parts: to the west, between the valleys of the Iskar and Topolnitsa Rivers — the Ihtiman Sredna Gora; in the middle, between the valleys of the Topolnitsa and Stryama rivers—the Sredna Gora proper (the highest); and to the east, between the valleys of the Stryama and Tundzha rivers—the Surnena Sredna Gora.

In addition to uniquely beautiful views and rich natural surroundings, the Sredna Gora region abounds with interesting tourist sites and landmarks, including numerous Thracian sanctuaries, some of which are world-renowned. The mountain’s geological structure also accounts for the presence of numerous mineral springs at its foothills. The Sredna Gora is inhabited primarily by Central European animal species. With its beech and oak forests, numerous caves, and hot springs, the region has been inhabited since before the 5th millennium BCE. Numerous Thracian and Roman cultural artifacts have been discovered there.
