Types of traveling documents

One-way tickets, at regular prices

Preliminary sales – tickets are sold by railway offices and at the stations up to 5 days prior to the date of traveling. For holidays and in the summer season, tickets are sold 20 days in advance.

Conditions of use – interim stops in the journey are not allowed.

Term of validity – from beginning to end of travel, also when making an immediate connection with other trains at joint stations.

One-way tickets, at calendar prices

Tickets at calendar prices are issued for Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, Mondays and for holiday eves and holidays only for certain trains.

Return tickets

Preliminary sales – tickets are sold by railway offices and at the stations up to 5 days prior to the date of traveling. For holidays and in the summer season, tickets are sold 20 days in advance.

Conditions of use – Return tickets are issued for all categories of trains. The passenger must have his ticket stamped at the station before the return journey, otherwise when checked in the return train he will be considered as a passenger without a ticket. The only exception is in the case when the return journey starts from an unmanned hault – then the ticket is stamped by the ticket collector in the train.

Term of validity – the return journey should end by 24:00 hrs at the latest on:

  • the day of the journey or the last day of a weekend or national holiday period, when they are consecutive – for a distance of up to 100 km;
  • the third day as of the date of onward journey – for distances of up to 300 km;
  • the thirtieth days as of the date of onward journey – for distances of more than 300 km.

Special Return tickets

Preliminary sales – tickets are sold by railway offices and at the stations up to 5 days prior to the date of traveling. For holidays and in the summer season, tickets are sold 20 days in advance.

Conditions of use – the special return tickets are issued for fast and express trains along particular routes. The onward and return route should be the same. Before the return journey, the passenger must get his ticket stamped at the station.

Term of validity – 30 days as of the date of journey.

Weekend tickets

Preliminary sales – tickets are sold by railway offices and at the stations up to 5 days prior to the date of traveling. For holidays and in the summer season, tickets are sold 20 days in advance

Conditions of use – Holiday return tickets are issued for passenger trains for suburban zones at distances up to 50 km. The tickets are valid for the return trip with an obligatory validation and a slip issued for the number of the train. A passenger without this slip and with a non-validated ticket in the train is considered to be without a ticket. Exceptions are made in cases when the return trip started from a non-serviced station. The ticket is then validated in the train and a slip for the number of the train is issued.

Term of validity – until 24:00 hours on the last day of Saturdays, Sundays and official holidays, when they are consecutive.

Urban Tickets

Preliminary sales – tickets are sold by railway offices and at the stations up to 5 days prior to the date of traveling.

Conditions of use – urban tickets are issued for regional and fast trains within a particular urban zone.

Terms of validity - from beginning to end of travel.

Group travel tickets

Preliminary sales – tickets are sold by railway offices and at the stations up to 5 days prior to the date of traveling.

Conditions of use – group travel tickets are issued for organized groups of passengers – a minimum of 10 people and 1 group leader. The group leader should submit two copies of a list with the names of the group members and their birthdates. The group is entitled to 20% discount from the regular price and a return ticket is issued. The preliminary seat reservation is obligatory. The price for the reservation of each seat is 0.5 lev.

Students below 26 are entitled to 75% discount when the relevant responsible person provides a letter and two stamped by school and signed copies of a list with the names of the students and their birthdates. If the students in the group come from different schools/universities, the name of the relevant educational institution should be indicated in the list of students. The students should be holders of a “Student" pass. For each 10 students there should be one supervising adult, who is entitled to the same discount.

Term of validity – 30 days as of the date of journey. The return journey should end at 24:00 hrs at the latest on the thirtieth day. Within the term of validity of the ticket, the group is entitled to an unlimited number of intermediate stops. If such occur the group should obtain a certificate at the station, where it interrupted its journey, for the number of train with which it will continue to travel.

One-way tickets for small groups of 3 – 6 passengers

Preliminary sales – tickets are sold by railway offices and at the stations up to 5 days prior to the date of traveling. For holidays and during the summer season, tickets are sold 20 days in advance

Conditions of use – for small groups of 3 – 6 people, traveling together along the same route. Children between 7 and 10 years old are counted as one passenger.

Interim stops in the journey are not allowed

Terms of validity - from beginning to end of travel, including the immediate connection to other trains at junction stations.

Route passes

Preliminary sales – route passes are sold by 94 railway offices and at stations with electronic issuing of tickets.

Conditions of use – Unlimited number of travels with fast and regional trains within the term of validity. Route passes do not bear the name of the holder. They are issued for an urban zone, the whole railway network or for a separate section and are sold at regular or reduced prices.

  • Route passes at regular prices are valid for 5 days, one month or three months. The route pass for 5 days is issued for a particular line section of up to 100 km
  • Route passes at reduced prices – 50% and 25% discount - are issued against a railway pass. The only exception is made for senior citizens who are not holders of “Senior citizen" railway pass – such passengers should only present their Certificate for retirement and an ID card. This offer is valid only for Bulgarian nationals and foreign nationals, who reside permanently in Bulgaria.

Term of validity – one or three months.

Seat reservations

Seat reservations are made only against a ticket or other travel document.
The price for a seat reservation in a fast train, whatever the distance and the class of traveling, is 0.50 BGN.

Tickets for sleeping cars and couchettes

Preliminary sales – berths are booked, together with the tickets, at the railway offices up to 30 days prior to the date of traveling.
The prices for a bed , whatever the distance, are:
- bed in a second class compartment – 10 BGN;
- bed in a first class compartment – 12 BGN;
- bed, business-class (single compartment) – 18 BGN.

Conditions of use – beds and couchettes are booked only against a ticket or other traveling document.
For children up to the age of 7, bed reservations are made if they occupy a separate bed; apart from the bed price, half the price of the ticket for traveling is paid.
For children up to the age of 10 bed reservations are made if they occupy a separate bed,
The price for a bed is also paid in the cases of free tickets and tickets with reduced prices, unless there is a different provision.
There is no reduction in the price for a bed.
